Almasäla: Eolh

CDA053 Ventilador Music, 2006

flamenco nuevo / etno/ethno / World Music: Spain

2 hand CD - condtition: ideal (foil)

Since the end of the 90's various cultures have been merging in the streets of Barcelona. A new style of music emerged from this period, it refers to a way of composing influenced by human and melodic encounters between Latin America, North Africa and Southern Europe. Paloma has a flamenco background, of singing and dance, as she was born in Andalucia. This is how she ended up sharing stage with Ojos de Brujo, Dusminguet, Brazuca Matraca, 08001...

Almasäla is her first project alone. Paloma, still close to her roots, offers in this first album called Eolh a personal crossbreeding where the rhythms of tradicional flamenco meet melodies from other continents.

Eolh is the story of an encounter between tanguillos with an arabic essence, bulería, soleá, rumba and tangos with South American and Jamaican harmonies, palmas and cantejondos with an electronic background.

This album, produced by her in Barcelona, is also a reencounter with many artists who put in Eohl their personal touch. The voices of Wagner Pá, Stéphanie (Shiva Sound) and Joan (Dusminguet) mingle with the rhythms of the Brazilian percussions of Sandro (Macaco), the cajon flamenco of Dani (Amparanoia), or Marti (Dusminguet)'s drums, and meet the the pulse of Sebi (Macaco – Shiva Sound)'s bass, Jordi (Amparanoia)'s double bass, and Muñeco (Amparanoia)'s Tres cubano .

Eolh also leaves room for the new Barcelona scene with the Venezuelian presence of Joanna on the keyboard and of “Pricto” for production and arrangements .

In concert Almasäla offers a show with costumes and scenery. It is an introduction to a flamenco, that through music, vocals, and dance, travels through time and space without loosing its strenght nor its magic

Thanks to Eolh, she made it into the top numbers of the World Music Charts Europe, she was talent FNAC for two months in a row (November and December) and performed in international festivals, such as the Festival d'un Monde à l'Autre, in Lyon, Women of the World or the Gateway International Roots Music Festival in the UK, she also got to present her work at the BAM 2007 (Barcelona Acció Musical), and performed at Womex, alongside with Abdeljalil Kodssi, and at the Music Awards Festival of Valladolid 2008. ALMASÄLA - ELS NENS SENSE MEMORIA

Almasäla: Eolh

Eohl is not only an album with a name that is ridiculously difficult to pronounce but it is also one that it is difficult to categorise beyond the flamenco label. While it is obviously Spanish, in style as well as language, it incorporates, rock, pop, the lighter end of drum and bass as well as the sounds of southern Spain. [za: www.flyglobalmusic.com]

ALMASÄLA - PA TI NO ES NA

Almasäla (a.k.a. Paloma Povedano) was part of the Ojos de Brujo collective and sung on their Vengue album. Since the end of the 90s she has been letting the mish mash of cultures that reside in Barcelona wash over her and this is the result. Her background is flamenco, and that is obvious throughout the album, but she also incorporates elements from Latin America, northern Africa and southern Europe.

Her vocal style is very much that of a flamenco singer with its slightly nasal tone and beauty coming from power rather than a delicate touch. The album opens with the rocky ‘Caminando Por La Calle’ before moving on to the almost floaty ‘Pa Ti No Es Ná’ and ambient drum n’ bass sound of ‘Els Nens Sense Memòria’. There is an electronic element present throughout the album but for the most part it remains subtle and is overshadowed by the excellent Juanjo Barreda “Potato” on flamenco guitar.

Eohl is the name of an ancestral stone that means union and is said to signify the arrival of new influences, often through unconscious emotions. It is also a personal form of understanding flamenco and that is what the album provides, Almasäla’s own personal view of flamenco music.

The album may lack that distinctive stand out track but it is a good listen none the less and certainly marks Almasäla out as one to keep an eye on [Joe Kent - www.frusion.co.uk]
